Yesterday, came across a handy site named “ManageFlitter” (erstwhile ManageTwitter) while I was in the pursuit of uncluttering my twitter following stream for some obvious reasons.
Although there are plenty of services in the Twitter wild that recommend people you should follow, I’ve long needed one to recommend who I maybe shouldn’t be following. Of those, ManageFlitter is pick of the lot… It’s a must-use service for any tweeple with large number of following.
What “ManageFlitter” does?
1. Clean up and manage who you follow.
2. Find out who isn’t following you back.
3. Find out which inactive accounts you follow.
4. Easily search inside your Twitter stream.
How to Use?
It’s pretty straight forward.
1. Enter the home page: ManageFlitter
2. Click the “Start” button in the top box.
3. Connect to your Twitter account with OAuth (Pretty safe. No storage of password in the service side)
4. Allow access to the application.
5. Then Twitter will redirect you to the ManageFlitter dashboard. It’ll take some time to load if you’re popular & or your following is huge! Keep in mind, they will only process the most recent 5000 people you’ve followed due to Twitter’s API limit.
That’s it. You’re good to go…
Here’s the look of the dashboard (Click to enlarge):
In the left side panel, there are various options (Not following back, Inactive, Talkative, Quiet…) are available to sort out the following. Just mouse hover those options to get the idea. For example, once you click the ‘No Profile Image’ tab link, the main (middle) panel shows all the people you’re following who’ve never set their profile image (aka people with default twitter icon). Mind you, by default ‘Not Following Back’ (People you follow, but they aren’t) is loaded in the mid panel.
By default, ‘Select All’ option is enabled. Anyhow you can ‘Deselect Verified/popular’ accounts and or ‘Deselect All’ and after examining the user names carefully click the ‘tick box’ against each & everyone you want to unfollow. And… wait for the process to complete.
Voila! Your Twitter following stream is uncluttered now. By the way, I just unclutter mine yesterday (nearly 1000+ who’re not following me back (for no apparent reason
), inactive for past 30 days).
As I’m posting, this brilliant service unfollowed 5304879 people for 33121 users in the past 1 month.
By the way, this service was featured on Techcrunch too.
Go and try out this efficient, yet free service and have peace of mind.

UPDATE | HELP ‘ManageTwitter’ To SURVIVE
23, April 2010 – ManageTwitter may have to cease service in one week due to a request from Twitter. If you are a user of ManageTwitter.com and would like it’s service to continue, you can retweet this status update, use the tag #savemanagetwitter or read more and leave a comment here.
Update: 4, May 2010 – After made a couple of changes to stick with Twitter’s guidelines, they are now problem free.
(1) Changed name from “ManageTwitter” to “MangeFlitter” to avoid using Twitter’s trademark in their name.
(2) Removed the “Select All” button and the default selection on accounts when a page is loaded. Instead they have come up with a bit of an interface compromise which Twitter has tentatively approved. Each page now has an expandable overview where you can now drag your mouse across the avatars of accounts to select them for unfollowing.
